Mathematics Overview
-
Newburyport High School requires that all students complete 3 years of study in Mathematics.
We offer a variety of sequences for students in the study of mathematics. We have found that having options to address individual student strengths and/or needs and assuring appropriate placement is key to students being successful in high school math. Students can move between different levels depending on academic performance and a teacher's recommendation.
A traditional college preparatory math sequence should include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
Placement
Students receive placement recommendations from eighth grade teachers. Students at NHS must receive a C or higher in a college prep level course in order to move on to the next course of the sequence. To move up a level, the requirements differ depending on course and level. For specific details about the Honors placement process, please refer to the Program of Studies. When making student placement recommendations, teachers take into consideration a student’s skill set, motivation, study habits, and grades.
